Here is my entry for the McLaren F1 x webex #drivethedesign US GP flag competition! I didn’t get shortlisted in the end, but I still had a lot of fun working on this concept.
My theme for this was NASA and the title ‘183 stars and counting’.
I wanted to celebrate McLaren’s past success so the logo is made up of 183 stars to represent each of McLaren’s race wins so far. The ‘lone star’ represents Daniel’s latest win and McLaren’s first since 2012 (as well as the state of Texas where the US Grand Prix takes place!).
Each element on this flag has been carefully chosen to reflect some part of the ‘brief’. For example the, the trail around the bottom of the logo refers to the NASA logo, the webex logo as well as representing the 8 US Grand Prix that McLaren has previously won. The background constellations all refer to icons of Texas as well as the two McLaren drivers, Daniel and Lando.
I also went through different colourways, all including ‘papaya’ as this was a requirement.
Everything was created in Affinity Designer, using their Artboards and their pixel persona when required. This was mainly created using vector art. Because of the number of shapes within this, it was great to build a cleaner and more organised workflow by working with groups (and to keep track of how many things there were)!
I had a lot of fun doing this and it felt really great to run away with an idea! I was hoping to get shortlisted, but it just wasn’t meant to be – especially not when there are so many talented creatives and designs out there!
